Date: 2/15/2024 Day 42 Port:
PAGO PAGO, AMERICAN SAMOA
Description: Located on Tutuila, the largest of
the Samoan islands in the South Pacific Ocean, Pago Pago is the capital of
American Samoa. First settled by the Polynesians around 600 BC, the islands
became a territory of the US in 1900. An important coaling station and naval
base, the Pago Pago harbor proved to be of strategic importance during World
War II. Today its beauty and ecological diversity make it a popular tourist
destination.
Planned
Excursion: VILLAGE
WAY OF LIFE
3.0 Hours Light Activity # PPG-004: Free
Travel
to the idyllic western side of Tutuila to visit a faithfully recreated communal
Samoan village. Pass spectacular terrain
along the way, including monolithic Fatu-ma-Futi Rock. Observe demonstrations of daily activities
and the traditional ways of life still practiced in the village. Wander among open-sided thatched fale
canopies and sample a meal cooked in an oven of hot rocks and banana leaves.
Todays Notes: After days of rough seas and missed ports, due to weather, we were finally able to get off the ship today. The forecast was not hopefully today with a 80% chance of rain and thunderstorms. As it turned out it was just overcast with one rain shower on our excursion.
We boarded open air small buses all the locals use. It was hot, humid and bumpy ride. We enjoyed our excursion and Cathy especially enjoyed the outdoor cooking. Joe and Pat did not enjoy their excursion in that they did not stop often enough to take pictures. They rode in the same small open air buses.
We'll be time traveling overnight tonight when we cross the International Date Line. Today is Thursday Feb 15th and when we wake up tomorrow it will be Saturday Feb 17th arriving in APIA, SAMOA.
It looks like you have missed a lot of neat stops because of weather! We have been enjoying spring like weather after our -34 but know we will probably get more snow, probably for Easter!!!
