Date: 2/17/2024 Day 43 Port: APIA, SAMOA
Description: Samoa is made up of nine islands
about 1700 miles north east of New Zealand. The islands were originally settled
about 1000 BC by a thriving Polynesian culture. In Apia, explore the colorful
Maketi Fou (food market) on Fugalei Street, and the flea market – the perfect
souvenir haunt where you’ll find everything from clubs and kava bowls to Samoan
sarongs, baskets, and jewelry. Discover alluring blue lagoons, serene tropical
beaches, cascading waterfalls, and lush rainforests. On Mount Vaea lies the
beautifully restored home of author Robert Louis Stevenson. Tempt your taste
buds with ocean-fresh fish wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in an umu , an
earth oven of hot stones.
Planned
Excursion: COASTAL
VILLAGES, FALEFA FALLS & TROPICA
4.0 Hours Strenuous Activity # API-006: Free
Enjoy a
scenic drive along the northeastern coast, its traditional villages facing the
sea. Stop to admire Falefa Waterfall and
Estuary, where the cascade once graced a trading post. See marvelous views overlooking Fagaloa Bay
and bask in the beauty of Gina’s Tropical Gardens. Enjoy complimentary tropical refreshments and
seasonal fruit and see how a coconut palm is climbed.
Today's Notes: It was a warm, humid and mostly sunny day. Today the buses were airconditioned a step up from yesterday's wooden buses, but not a full size coach bus. We toured two beautiful Catholic churches, a Waterfall park, Tropical Gardens and then the local market. Pat and Joe took a different excursion and reported that they enjoyed it. I am trying to get them to send a me a note after each excursion reflecting on their day that I can include here.
